The woodland path

£150.00 Sale Save

This is a mixed media work exploring the feeling of winter, the profile of the season, dark lines and muted colours. The smell of the foliage and branches damp or rotting under foot making way for the rebirth or arrival of Spring. The sounds in the winter carry through the air  in a different way. The silhouettes of the hedgerows and skylines are sharper and quite eye catching in the light.

This part of a path along the river Dart as it winds way past the Sharpham estate toward Dartmouth is often very muddy and one hears voices and sounds from across the river.

I wanted to capture the essence of time and place a reminder that when winter meets spring half way. This is celebrated in the Orthodox Church just after Valentine’s Day, it marks forty days after the Orthodox Christmas Day which falls on the 7th of January. It seems then that people have marked this occasion for centuries.
