I love this view from a hotel room in the city….so I drew it. Initially in my sketchbook in pencil along with some small quick sketches in pastel. I am now scaling up for some oil paintings having dipped into acrylics. The city has a face and a pulse from the industrial years, a heart that still beats. The charcoal marks are to encourage me with my painting to be free and explore the shapes on the surface.

A brooding urban landscape, this artwork immerses the viewer in an evocative cityscape drawn with bold, expressive charcoal strokes. The immediate impression is one of gritty texture and dramatic contrasts, where sprawling buildings and towering structures appear almost to breathe. Individual elements like the formidable cathedral-like structure and the skeletal crane contribute to the palpable tension and depth within the piece. Stark shadows and rugged lines define the composition, amplifying the raw and unfiltered aesthetic of the urban setting. This portrayal of construction and deconstruction reflects contemporary themes of transformation and resilience, challenging the observer to contemplate the perpetual evolution of our environments.
