September at North Wood

- Contradicting the rugged brushstrokes, a serene landscape emerges, revealing an unexpected tranquility. Rich greens and warm earthy tones intertwine with soft blues and whites, creating a lush, almost dream-like vision. The thick, textural strokes add a changing energy while still maintaining a calming atmosphere. The play of light and shadow across the scene hints at a fleeting moment captured in time, yet the flow of colors and forms suggests an eternal place of peace. Its contribution to contemporary culture lies in the ability to soothe the viewer amidst a chaotic world, proposing that even within disorder, one can find solace and introspection.
- This is a lovely spot to sit throughout the year and draw and contemplate the changing seasons. On the Dartington estate alongside the Deer park a track runs down to the North wood. I like to work from some of the sketches and drawings I have made during my visits and as in this case begin to work them up to a painting.Looking through the additional images I provide here, you can see how I use found pigments, sheep skat, fallers sticks to sketch gesturally. These small works form the basis for studies and a real feel for time and place. I use some charcoal or pencil to supplement the foraged art materials.
