After a harvest
Along the banks of the River Dart as one walks away the town following a path behind the boat yard there glimpses of the fields on the other side of the river. Peeping through the shadows of the trees the late summer sun cast wonderful organic shadows in the harvested fields. The land in this work belongs to the Duke of Somerset. At this point the developers have not got to it and so through out the year I can still capture the changing seasons. This is looking North toward Town Farm.
In a world where clarity intertwines with obscurity, a paradox unfolds through earthy tones and textured compositions. The rugged landscape feels almost dreamlike, with light and shadow crafting a scene that alternates between chaos and serenity. Charcoal-darkened areas contrast with soft, muted yellows, suggesting richness within the apparent randomness. This contrast weaves a connection between permanence and transience, as textures prompt viewers to delve deeper. As one's gaze navigates the layered details, an emotional experience emerges, conveying a state of meditative tranquility intertwined with an unsettling energy beneath. What emotions arise from this complex arrangement of textures and tones?
This is a mixed media work on a Fabriano paper. I have built up layers of a ground with gesso and found natural pigments including some lovely Bideford Black. Bideford black was used to camouflage tanks during WW2 and was late purchased by Max Factor to make mascara. The work is bonded with several layers of a natural shellac.
