Scaffholding at Templemeads

Part of a series of work looking at the Templemeads area of Bristol, the industrial architecture of a bygone age. The tones and textures caught my attention on the way to the hotel, so much so that on checking in I asked the receptionist to change the room number so that I might have a good view of it all.

This is the second series of drawings and paintings to grow from this inspiring city. From the original small sketches I drew these pastels. The pastels will be used to create a larger composition and some paintings in acrylic, a scaling up as it were.

The brick facade presents a fascinating network of rough texture and color gradients. Fire-red and burnt orange strokes lend the building warmth and character, while hints of cool blue and green in the windows provide contrast. The overall composition reflects expressionist styles reminiscent of early 20th-century explorations of emotion through urban scenes. Each brushstroke and color choice animates the structure, revealing layers of history and stories within its walls. As viewers engage with the architectural marvel, they encounter a progression from detail to grandiosity, culminating in a deep appreciation for its weathered yet lively existence.
